● Gewölbe

The "Gewölbe" is a notorious techno club, burrowed into the tracks of Cologne's Train Station West. With vaults up to 6 meters high, the architecture is reminiscent of heavy machinery, oil and coal. To create an immersive corporate identity that combines space (the physical) with the cultural dimension and its own distinct "style", we developed a formal language that relies heavily on the play of light and darkness.

Project

The “Gewölbe” is a notorious techno club, burrowed into the tracks of Cologne’s Train Station West. With vaults up to 6 meters high, the architecture is reminiscent of heavy machinery, oil and coal. To create an immersive corporate identity that combines space (the physical) with the cultural dimension and its own distinct “style”, we developed a formal language that relies heavily on the play of light and darkness.

The interior consists of a bold bar with shutters (which the carpenter reduced to be non-functional because he did not like the original design), seating furniture and shutter room dividers. The seating is a remix from the “Ulmer Hocker” and turned into a series of 3, 2 and 1 benches that fit inside each other to provide storage.

The three-dimensional design manifests itself in print and web with the distinctive Gewölbe typeface. It was developed especially for the club based on two typefaces from Floriane Rousselot’s french studio typelab.fr. Reminiscing Jun’ichirō*, the Gewölbe typeface is about the elegance of open space and the beauty of objects illuminated or obscured by a light source — a tribute to rave culture and its members — *praise the shadows.
